Making a Hand-Made Difference

Making a Hand-Made Difference

500. That’s how many shawls the members of the Glenn Dale United Methodist Church Shawl Ministry have made in the past five years.

Marilyn Hills started the group after being given the book Knitting Into The Mystery, a book about one woman’s adventure in establishing a knitting ministry Now, 11 members strong, the ladies meet once a week to knit and have fellowship with one another.  The church then blesses their hand-made shawls before sending the knitted creations to people in need.

“It’s just a very rewarding thing to do for people who I couldn’t do anything else for,” Marilyn said. “It is a way to express your love.”

This past December the group donated 12 shawls to Volunteers of America Chesapeake. Made of varying designs and beautiful bright colors, each shawl also included a special note and prayer. One card read:  “As you use this lap robe, may you be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace and wrapped in love.”

Shawl Ministry member Kay Smith said her favorite part of the experience is giving the shawl away.  “When you’re knitting for someone it’s very special…but when you go to give it away it becomes a very emotional event. We know that they’re going out to bring comfort.”

On behalf of everyone at Volunteers of America Chesapeake, thank you, ladies.  One stitch and one shawl at a time - You are making a difference!
