Marine Corps Base Quantico Participates in Service Day at Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter in Falls Church
Nearly a dozen marine and sailor volunteers from Marine Corps Base Quantico took time off the base Thursday Feb.10, to participate in a Service Day at Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter in Falls Church, Va..
“Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter residents and staff were very excited to have the Marines in for a service day because the Marines represent hope; hope for survival, hope for life and hope for an undefeated outlook,” said Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter Program Director Thomas Nichols. “The Marines are a group renowned for saving lives and it’s very appropriate that they would volunteer to help a very vulnerable group of individuals.”
From 9 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and picked up paint brushes, painting the shelter’s community room where the residents gather for entertainment and convene for groups such as Life Skills Training.
Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter is an emergency homeless shelter for adult men and women providing several different services including: medical care, mental health services, substance abuse counseling, education and training for homeless individuals. During the winter months, from Nov. 1 to March 31, the center is also home to a Hypothermia Program. They will also have lunch with the residents and interact with the shelter population.
