Students Start School with Homerun Volunteering

Major Leaguer Justin Maxwell of the Washington Nationals and high school student leaders from the Volunteers of America Chesapeake's Action Team joined together to help homeless adults living at Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Residential Program Center in Arlington, VA.

The event served homeless adults at the Residential Program Center who receive services including non-medical detoxification, substance abuse recovery and temporary shelter from Volunteers of America Chesapeake.

Maxwell and high school volunteers sorted donated toiletries, made welcome kits for clients, organized recent clothing donations and sorted the center’s donation closets.

The event is just one activity through the Action Team program. Administered by Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the Action Team® program encourages young people throughout the United States to volunteer in their communities. Action Teams, consisting of Major League baseball players and student Team Captains from more than 145 high schools in 30 states and Puerto Rico, are working together to encourage young people to get involved in their communities by volunteering. To date, Action Teams across the country have inspired more than 25,000 high school students to help over 100,000 people in need by volunteering in their communities.
