District of Columbia Community Living Centers

In 2007, Volunteers of America Chesapeake was given the opportunity to help the District of Columbia serve some of the area’s toughest clients – the mentally ill who are frequently homeless and the mentally retarded/developmentally disabled with significant medical and behavioral needs. In a new partnership with the District of Columbia’s Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Administration, Volunteers of America Chesapeake accepted the request to manage group homes as a Medicaid Waiver Provider for approximately 30 individuals with disabilities living in the District of Columbia.

The ultimate goal of the DC Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Program is to ensure that individual residents live in a healthy and safe environment, receiving all the necessary services to foster continued development in the most nonrestrictive living arrangement.

Since funding for the program is based on acuity, Volunteers of America Chesapeake can develop supportive services tailored to resident’s needs. Some of the approved Medicaid Wavier Services include training for money management, independent living, cooking, savvy travel, adaptive living, behavior prevention, and community integration. In conjunction with assigned Department of Developmental Services Coordinators, residents also receive medical monitoring and follow up as needed.

A growing program, the DC MRRD helps fulfill the organization’s mission and expand its reach in the nation’s capitol. Similar to the Northern Virginia Community Living Centers, DC MRDD serves consumers with some of the most intensive lifelong needs.
