Arlington Emergency Winter Shelter
In early February 2008, Danielle Cole, Program Director of Volunteers of America Chesapeake Residential Program Center, received a call from the Arlington County Department of Human Services. A representative from the Economic Independence Division reported that the County’s 46-bed Emergency Winter Shelter was in dire need of help — in just two days.
“Of course Volunteers of America Chesapeake said ‘Yes!’” exclaims Cole. “Volunteers of America Chesapeake took over management of the program and gathered the necessary staff to cover each 15-hour shift, seven days a week.” DC Central Kitchen provided evening meals. In addition, nearly 100 volunteers logged in more than 700 service hours to assist the chronically homeless men and women who regularly visited the shelter.
Filled to capacity each night, the Arlington Emergency Winter Shelter offers temporary refuge with cots, evening meals, hot showers, laundry facilities, movies and bag breakfasts. For clients who also struggle with substance abuse and mental illness, Arlington County’s Treatment on Wheels (TOW) provides mental health services and a Substance Abuse Therapist provides services.
Located at near the Arlington Courthouse, the shelter has truly been successful thanks to strong community partnerships and volunteers who have donated not only meals, blankets and supplies, but also time and compassion.
