Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter
Ask any of the residents from Bailey Crossroads Community Shelter in Fairfax County, Virginia and they’ll tell you that they’ve made a commitment to improve their lives. In fact, they’ve all signed contracts agreeing to perform daily assigned chores, save 75% of earned income, and actively work on objectives as outlined in their personal plans under the guidance of skilled and caring case workers.
Nestled in a busy Falls Church neighborhood, Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter has a reputation on the streets as the place for the area’s mentally challenged homeless individuals to find refuge. At this 50-bed, short-term facility, adult residents work together to perform daily chores and fulfill objectives as outlined in their personal plans. The average stay at the shelter is 90 days and may include medical care, mental health services, substance abuse counseling, education and training. After this, most clients return for daily counseling, life skills classes and more. Still others may enter an aftercare program that offers consistent shelter and services for two more years.
As the community's primary emergency shelter since 1994, Bailey’s also provides a Drop In program two days a week, where homeless people can bathe, eat a good meal and wash clothes. During the coldest months, 10 cots are added for single night stays. In addition to core services, Fairfax County staff, volunteers and other community-based organizations provide medical care, mental health services, substance abuse counseling, education and training.
Best known for reaching out to the community to raise funds and awareness for homelessness, Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter also raises hope for a positive future for thousands of individuals each year.
