Winter Shelter

From October to April, The Winter Shelter provides emergency services to more than 50 homeless adults each night between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Through outreach efforts, word-of-mouth and local police department referrals, individuals seeking shelter are encouraged to report to a designated central location and are then transported to a site where cots, bedrolls, food and coffee are available.

On a rotating basis, various churches in Virginia Beach host the shelter and prepare meals.  At 7:00 a.m. the following morning, clients leave the shelter until the next evening's collection period. Established in 1990, this program is truly a partnership between local churches and public agencies, orchestrated by Volunteers of America Chesapeake.
