Shelter Plus Care Housing Program

Location in Prince George County the Shelter Plus Care program is funded by HUD under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and is provided through the Prince George’s County Department of Family Services, Mental Health and Disabilities Administration.

The purpose of the program is to provide permanent housing in connection with supportive services to homeless people with disabilities and their families.  Unlike transitional housing programs, no time limit can be placed on tenancy in a Shelter Plus Care assisted unit.  Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Inc. is a sponsor-based Shelter Plus Care program provider in the Prince George’s County, under the Maryland Mental Hygiene Administration’s Shelter Plus Care Housing Program. There are total of 35 scattered site units (27 family units and 8 single units) available.

The objective of the program

1. To assist participants to obtain/remain in permanent housing.

2. To increase skills and/or income of participants.

3. To help participants achieve greater self-determination.
